Foods for Thyroid Health
When it comes to food for thyroid health and naturally boosting your thyroid you should start out by reducing goitrogen-rich foods and replacing them with foods that support your thyroid gland.
The foods that are good for the thyroid are foods rich in iron and vitamin B, fruits and vegetables that contain a lot of antioxidants, lean meat and fish, seaweed, olive oil, beans, and vegetable oil. B-vitamins are integral for a healthy thyroid gland.
This includes beef, turkey, liver, potatoes, brazil nuts, black beans, lentils and kefir. Iron-rich vegetables are also great for thyroid health. This includes parsley and beets. Whole grains, such as brown rice, lentils, millet, barley, oats, wild rice, popcorn, and wheatmeal are also good for the thyroid. Seaweed comes recommended by Dr Edward Bauman of the Santa Fe, New Mexico University of Natural Medicine.
Problems with the thyroid are commonly caused by free radicals. Antioxidants are used to protect us from free radicals and keep the body, including the thyroid, running efficiently.
To keep your thyroid healthy you should eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables including tomatoes, blueberries, peppers and zucchini. Not all vegetables are created equally however and foods such as cauliflower, broccoli, cabbage, kale, rapeseed, turnips, Brussels sprouts, and kohlrabi could induce a goitrogenic effect.
While those vegetables are considered to be very healthy in their own ways, they can still impair the thyroid gland.
Eating too many foods that are bad for the thyroid can even cause the thyroid to stop absorbing hormones. However you can reduce, if not remove, the goitrogenic effect of these foods by cooking them; especially if you steam cook them. Lean meat, flax, coldwater sea fish, and beans are rich in protein and help keep the thyroid functioning properly.
Organic foods are a great choice because they are free from hormones and steroids that could inhibit thyroid hormone production.
Omega-3 fatty acids are also important to keeping the thyroid healthy. Salmon and tuna are great ish sources of these fatty acids. Fish that have been fed a diet of seaweed contain more omega-3 fatty acids.
Flaxseed supports thyroid health. Get more flaxseed in your diet by putting it in a coffee grinder and putting it in salads, soups, and yogurts. If you want to use flaxseed as a seasoning for your food it’s important to add it to the dish after it has been cooked rather than before.
The University of Maryland suggests that if you want to keep your thyroid healthy you should always cook using healthy cooking oils such as coconut oil and olive oil.
