Carrots are regarded as one of the healthiest foods out there. Back in the day, when we were still kids, our parents used to tell us to eat carrots because they are good for our health, particularly for the eyes. 1. Improved Vision
Western culture’s understanding of carrots being ‘good for the eyes’ is one of the few we got right. Carrots are rich in beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the liver. Vitamin A is transformed in the retina, to rhodopsin, a purple pigment necessary for night vision.
Beta-carotene has also been shown to protect against macular degeneration and senile cataracts. A study found that people who eat the most beta-carotene had 40 percent lower risk of macular degeneration than those who consumed little.

In a nutshell, losing weight can be achieved when calories burned exceed calories in. Carrots have a lot of bang for their buck; meaning a wide variety of nutrients for minimal calories, a concept also known as “nutrient-dense.” Think of it this way: A cup of candy is basically a cup of sugar without any nutrients, containing at least 500 calories depending on the candy. A cup of carrots has approximately 50 calories and all sorts of nutrients.
3. Prevent Heart Disease
In a study meant to reveal the therapeutic value of carrots, researchers at the Wolfson Gastrointestinal Laboratory in Edinburgh, Scotland revealed that cholesterol level drops by an average of 11 percent if seven ounces of raw carrots per day are taken for three weeks. Since regular consumption of carrots reduces cholesterol levels, it is a good idea to consume a healthy dose of carrots, in order to prevent heart-related problems. A group of Swedish scientists discovered that these root vegetables can reduce the chances of having a heart attack. A study conducted at the Mario Negri Institute of Pharmacological Research in Italy found that those who ate more carrots had a 1/3rd risk of heart attack as compared with those who ate fewer carrots.
4. Protects Teeth and Gums
It’s all in the crunch! Carrots clean your teeth and mouth. They scrape off plaque and food particles just like toothbrushes or toothpaste. Carrots stimulate gums and trigger a lot of saliva, which, being alkaline, balances out the acid-forming, cavity-forming bacteria. The minerals in carrots prevent tooth damage.
5. Boosts Skin Health and Wound Healing
Beta carotene is critical for healing any type of wound. Carrots have even been used as a poultice to help heal wounds for centuries due to their high beta carotene content. 6. Boost Immunity
A well-functioning immune system is vital for overall health – it helps our body identify and fight off foreign viruses, bacteria, and other threats. When it comes to strengthening the immune system, vitamin A (along with vitamin D) takes center stage. It stimulates the production and activity of white blood cells, which play a huge role in defending the body against diseases. Vitamin A also helps regulate the release of immune cells in the gut. Of course, carrots also contain vitamin C in small amounts, which is another key nutrient in boosting the immune system. To a lesser extent, carrots contain other immunity boosting nutrients such as vitamin B6 (5% RDV per large carrot), vitamin E (2%), and copper (2%).
7. Prevent Diabetes
Carrots contain beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant associated with lower diabetes risk. In one study, those with the most beta-carotene in their blood had 32 percent lower insulin levels than those with lower levels of beta-carotene.
