The thyroid is an endocrine gland, located in the neck. The function of the thyroid is to release hormones. Thyroid releases two hormones into the blood, triiodothyronine, and thyroxine. These hormones regulate growth, energy, and your metabolism.

As mentioned, thyroid disorders are more common in women. They happen as a result of an imbalance of the thyroid hormone. There are two types of disorders, hyperthyroidism, and hypothyroidism. The former is when your thyroid produces more hormone than needed, and the latter is when the thyroid does not produce enough hormone.

Common symptoms include sleep issues, irritation, anxiety, sudden weight loss, rapid heart rate, heat sensitivity, and diarrhea. In the case of hypothyroidism, your thyroid is not producing enough hormone. Symptoms of this disorder include hair thinning, fatigue, weight gain, muscle pain, cramps, dry skin, excess fluid in tissues, cold sensitivity, and concentration problems.

Causes for thyroid disorders

There are several reasons you develop thyroid disorders. The first one is chronic stress, one of the most common causes for health issues. Toxins overload and metal buildup are also factors that play a role. Sometimes, iodine deficiency can lead to thyroid disorders.

In rare cases, hyperthyroidism can be caused by Graves’ sickness and toxic adenomas. Hypothyroidism, on the other hand, is often a result of lithium and iodine overexposure, as well as thyroid removal. The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

How to protect yourself?

As with any disorder, the best cure is prevention. You have to protect yourself and your body. To do that, you can make small changes to your lifestyle.

– Exercise regularly to get an optimal production of the thyroid hormone

– Lower the intake of gluten and dairy products to prevent digestive stress

– If all else fails, opt for some thyroid hormone replacement therapy or high-quality nutritional supplements. Your physician will recommend thyroid hormone replacement therapy when you need to treat a thyroid disorder.
