Mahatma Gandhi once said, “It is health which is a real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” And it’s true. You really can’t invest enough in good health. No matter how rich or in love you may be, the moment you catch a cold, you transform into the modern-day Ophelia and pester your twitter followers with a million, “O, woe is me” pity-party ramblings. Grr.

Since even the tiniest of physical discomforts can seem like the end of the world to us, here’s a list of 9 insanely wonderful health hacks you MUST know. Like, seriously. Drop whatever you’re doing and take notes!

1. Stuffy Nose NO MORE, Use An Onion!

There’s nothing more aggravating in this world than a congested nose. For real. However, science says that onions could help clear out all that horrible stuffiness. Simply cut raw onions and leave them on your nightstand when you sleep. Onions contain a compound called quercetin, which has anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties that can clear out congested sinuses.

2. Sleep Better

Good sleep allows the body to repair itself daily. “Sleep is as vital to survival as food and water,” says Philips sleep expert Anwen Evans. “In our rush to meet the demands of work and family, social lives and household tasks, we incur sleep debt exactly as you would incur financial debt.”

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is a growing issue – and one that only 20 percent of sufferers are aware they have. If left untreated, OSA can increase the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and stroke. There are excellent treatments being pioneered by companies such as Philips – so if you are waking up after eight hours in bed and still feeling extremely tired, visit your GP.

3. Keep Ginger Root in the Freezer

Easy healthy hacks you can use every day to eat better and make healthier food for your family. Save time and money with these healthy tips. Fresh ginger adds pizzazz to savory and sweet recipes but, since a little can go a long way, you generally wind up buying more than you need. Next time you buy fresh ginger wrap it tightly with plastic wrap, drop it into a freezer baggie and store it in the freezer. Frozen ginger is easy to grate (another reason to own a microplane) and maintains that pop of flavor. You can quickly shave off as much as you need then re-wrap the rest to another use.

4. Say Goodbye To Acne With Cold Showers

Tired of incessant breakouts? Try this easy-breezy hack! Before leaving your sinfully hot shower, go to the sink and douse your face with some ice cold water. Better yet, rub some ice over your face post-shower. Chilled water can help close skin pores. Bonus? It’s super refreshing!

5. Avoid Pollution

Air pollution (particularly from car exhausts) contributes to tens of thousands of premature deaths in the UK every year. Breathing in fumes is linked to chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, and heart disease, as well as damage to the brain, nerves, liver, and kidneys. Particulates from cars have also recently been linked to dementia. So leave your car at home and take the train to work. Walk green routes rather than along busy roads.

6. Speaking of Frozen Vegetables – Put Them in Everything!

Frozen mixed vegetables should be a staple in any healthy cooks pantry. Frozen vegetables retain their nutrients making it easy to add a nutritional boost to almost anything. Just be careful not to overcook them. Frozen vegetables only need a few minutes in warm water or steam before they are ready to serve. My favorite trick is stirring a few cups of frozen veggies into pasta right before it is done cooking then mixing it all with the sauce.

7. Prevent Overeating By… Eating Before Eating

I know, it sounds bizarre. But, hey, it actually happens to work! The next time you head out to a big dinner, buffet or party, don’t waste all that hard work you put in dieting. Eat an apple or banana and drink two glasses of water before you leave to give your stomach a head start. This could really save you from having that second helping of chocolate truffle cake that you’ll go home and cry over.

8. Take Care of Your EYES by Following the 20/20/20 Rule

Staring at a backlit device such as a smartphone or laptop all day is straining on your eyes. The 20/20/20 rule reduces this. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and let your eyes wander over something six meters (20 ft) in the distance.

9. Make a Habit out of Drinking Herbal Teas

There is a herbal tea for everything. Green tea is a great energy-boosting alternative to coffee, chamomile helps you go to sleep, and fennel and peppermint teas aid digestion.
