Delay and Even Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia With Fish Oil
A study was recently conducted to look into the connection between dementia and fish oil. The results showed that consuming fish oil regularly reduced the rate of cerebral atrophy and cognitive impairment in elderly people.
The research was conducted on 229 respondents with normal cognitive abilities, 397 respondents suffering from mild cognitive damage, and 193 people diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease.
The respondents were put through a range of neuropsychological tests every six months, and magnetic resonating imaging (MRI) scans were done on their brains.
After studying the results, the scientists noticed that the respondents who experienced the least amount of cognitive decline were those who currently showed no signs of dementia and regularly consumed fish oil.
The interesting part of all this is that there was some cerebral atrophy seen in people from the same group but were not consuming fish oil.
Scientists did suggest that the positive results were only observed in respondents that lacked the APOE-4 gene, which is known for causing Alzheimer’s to develop.
This means that there needs to be further research to find out conclusive answers, but fish oil is showing encouraging results as far as slowing down the development of Alzheimer’s and dementia goes.
